Nicolet Area Technical College: Birchwood Center - Rhinelander

This project consisted of a remodel of the existing 10,000 square-foot building, which included: new windows and doors throughout; all new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; new offices and facelifts to shop areas; new flooring; and new ceilings. The exterior was painted and some new siding/EIFS was added. The 7,000 square-foot addition consisted of 4 new classrooms, added offices, and a fire training bay. This building, which was seeking LEED Silver Certification, was able to achieve the higher LEED Gold level. Some of the features that helped it earn this level included: the diversion of 94 percent of construction waste from landfills; the design of permanent storm water run-off systems that significantly improved the quality and reduced the quantity of storm water runoff; and the specification and use of adhesives, flooring, and sealants with very low levels of volatile organic compounds, which protected workers during construction and occupants from ongoing emissions and off-gassing.
